The goal of the Capital Campaign is to restore Holy Trinity Church to its former glory, after multiple renovations in the 1960s and 80s stripped the original beauty from the interior of the church, including covering the original stained glass windows in the sanctuary, removing the orignal communion rail and high altars, removing the ornate ambo (lectern) and original furnishings, and painting over the original paintings on the walls. This simplification of worship spaces was common after the second Vatican Council. Sixty years after the council, the church understands this interpretation of the council was greatly exaggerated.
As the church's restoration continues, Holy Trinity strives to restore interior elements that respect the historical integrity of the building, creating a worship space that integrates our history and Catholic tradition with present-day needs.
"Especially in a world where so many have lost sight of God in their lives, we want to restore the beauty of our church so that it might point people back to God. It's important for us that we honor the legacy of the Catholic immigrants, many of them German, who built this grand edifice, right in the center of Winsted, for the glory of God, so that the community could have a beauitful and dignified place to worship." - Fr. Matt Wiering, pastor.
These renovations and the unique historic architecture of Holy Trinity Church will allow the church to seek placement on the Minnesota Historic Register.
Holy Trinity Church officially launched its Capital Campaign in the fall of 2021, after completing a study in spring 2021 to confirm parish interest.
